To an outsider these look like generic gadgets. To an RT, each one carries its own long story. The idea of mechanical ventilation reaches back to the iron lung, first used clinically on a patient at Boston Children's Hospital in 1928; the bag-valve mask on the crash cart descends from the self-inflating resuscitator developed in the mid-1950s; CPAP, now standard for sleep apnea, was a later breakthrough.
